U.S. House votes to override water veto
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin calls measure 'common-sense investment'

November 07, 2007 | Rapid City Journal

South Dakota's lone member of the House voted to override President Bush's veto of a water-projects bill.

"This is common-sense investment in water infrastructure, including resources for critical projects in our state." Democrat Stephanie Herseth Sandlin said in a written statement after the override.

The Water Resources Development Act includes $65 million to expand the Mni Waste'/Tri-County Water System, which would serve 14,000 people in 17 communities on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation and in Dewey, Ziebach and eastern Meade counties.

South Dakota's senators, Democrat Tim Johnson and Republican John Thune, voted for the measure in the Senate, which also is expected to override the president's veto.

The water bill also authorizes money for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood programs.

Authorization bills such as the Water Resources Development Act set spending guidelines, but the actual money would come later in an appropriations bill.
