Fuel Costs Hit Families
KELO
June 5, 2006
US Representative Stephanie Herseth says a congressional study shows the need for a long-term energy policy that includes increased production of ethanol and Biodiesel fuels.
She says the study underscores the importance of energy independence.
But Herseth's Republican opponent, Bruce Whalen of Pine Ridge, says Herseth recently voted against a bill to expand oil and gas exploration.
The congressional study shows that South Dakotans are paying 54 percent more for gasoline than they were in 2001, an increase of five times the inflation rate.
Two-car families in South Dakota are paying almost $1,900 more for fuel each year than they did in 2001.
That's an extra 51 million dollars for Sioux Falls drivers in Sioux Falls and 34 million more for Rapid City drivers.
