Herseth speaks on education and her campaign
Story by: Deitra J. Tate, KEVN-TV
June 25, 2006
Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth speaks out about her campaign and Native American Education. On Sunday, Herseth was the guest speaker for the 33rd Commencement Ceremony at Oglala Lakota College in Kyle.
We caught up with Herseth after the graduation, and she spoke about her visions for Native American education in South Dakota. Those include preserving the current head start program…having flexibility within "No Child Left Behind" to integrate native language and culture in its curriculum…and continued investment in tribal colleges. "This is a tremendous success across Indian country. The return dollar for dollar that we invest in higher education for native people, the more we see economic development; the more we see business growth; the more we see healthcare providers in the clinics and other health care settings…for native people…by native people," said Herseth.
Herseth also spoke about the focus of her campaign for the November elections. "Renewable energy is a key part of what I'll be focused on in the campaign, as well as other forms of economic development important to our rural communities, important to our larger communities like Rapid City, and those throughout the Black Hills…as well as the work that I've been doing on behalf of South Dakota's veterans."
Herseth said she's looking forward to campaigning.
